September Songs

As the tune goes, the days grow short when you reach September. But alternative musicians have managed to make the most of them this September, with tantalizing new releases coming from a wide array of celebrated groups. Here are a few of my most anticipated.

September 4

Animal Collective – Centipede Hz (Domino)

It has been more than three years since the release of Merriweather Post Pavilion, which was among the most critically acclaimed albums of 2009. Take a listen to the track “Today’s Supernatural”.

Stars – The North (ATO)

The indie poppers from Montreal are back with their sixth full-length album. NPR Music says the album “rewards exploration with moments that alternately swoon, seethe, swing and paralyze.”

September 11

The xx – Coexist (Young Turks)

The xx’s debut album, xx, was one of the biggest indie successes of 2009. Will the band give listeners more of that unique minimalist style? Check out the track “Chained” below and see what you think.

September 18

Grizzly Bear – Shields (Secretly Canadian)

We’ve played a lot of Grizzly Bear on the show over the past two seasons. A lot. Having exhausted the track lists of Yellow House and Veckatimest, here’s hoping Shields will deliver more of the great psych-folk from their previous albums.

September 25

Mumford & Sons – Babel (Young Turks)

Admit it, you know you’re curious.

The Walkmen Have Done it Again

If you haven’t heard, the much-beloved indie rock band The Walkmen are back with a new album entitled Heaven, and as always, everyone loves it.

Heaven is The Walkmen’s seventh studio album (or sixth, depending on what you make of Pussy Cats), and continues a streak of critically-acclaimed releases spanning more than a decade.

In this special edition of Now That’s What I Call Boogie!, we examine their latest work but also cast a look back at some of the best songs they’ve made in their twelve years together as a band.

Heaven – Heaven (Fat Possum)

The first single off their new album, “Heaven” strikes me as a new kind of sound for the band. The anger and instability for which they were so well known seems to have been replaced by a more relaxed, nostalgic, even happy sound. They’re getting older, but they’re as great as ever.

And the Livin’ Is Easy, Again

It has been eight long, arduous weeks since the third edition of Now That’s What I Call Boogie, which you may recall featured songs fit for Spring Break partying. OK, it really hasn’t been that bad since then, but with finals now coming to a close, summer has begun and life is decidedly better. And so, we revisit our Spring Break theme and give you five more great tunes to kick off your summer.

Tin Man – Future Islands – In Evening Air (Thrill Jockey)

Future Islands was on the very first edition of NTWICB! and has since been played on the show as well (if you’re a Spotify user, check out one of the blog’s latest features, the Master Playlist). Take a listen to one of my favorites of theirs below.

Take a Walk – Passion Pit – Take a Walk (Single) (Columbia)

The first official look at their upcoming album, Take a Walk is a great listen. Pay attention to the lyrics, though – for such a joyous sound there is plenty of talk about empty purses, investments gone wrong, and financial troubles. While it may seem political amidst all the financial crises and economic woes, front man Michael Angelakos has said it is not a political song, but rather a song about “very specific family members” who immigrated to the United States.

Blessa – Toro y Moi – Causers of This (Carpark)

Get your chillwave on this summer with some Toro y Moi.

Black & Blue – Miike Snow – Miike Snow (Universal Republic)

This is how it feels when you emerge from finals week studies to find its summertime (see 2:37 and onwards in particular).

Soft – Washed Out – With and Without (Sub Pop)

My goal this summer is to attend as many hipster pool parties as possible. Seriously, this looks great.

That’s all for this week, but stay tuned for more of Now That’s What I Call Boogie! next week. The PTB Blog is open all summer long.
