Pieces and portions of rhythmic distortion relax me/ The echoes, reverb and feedback of reality disturb my peace
- Black Thought, “Peace”
Welcome to the second volume of Now That’s What I Call Boogie!, a weekly music playlist column that introduces you to some of our favorite music here at PTB. This week, Now features several late night jams and invites you to take some time at the end of your busy day, put your feet up, and relax.
“Will Do” – TV On The Radio – Nine Types of Light (Interscope)
A PTB favorite, TV On The Radio delivers this soulful gem.
“Make My” – The Roots feat. Big K.R.I.T. & Dice Raw – undun (Def Jam)
I had the enormous pleasure of seeing The Roots when they came to Iowa City last year. undun was released some ten months later. Wish I could have seen them perform this one. Gritty and powerful, for me it’s one of their best.
“MmmHmm” – Flying Lotus feat. Thundercat – Cosmogramma (Warp)
Now on to some more experimental sounds. FlyLo has managed to create his own avant garde sound combining elements of jazz, electronic, hip-hop, and even dupstep. He’s collaborated with Thom Yorke and Erykah Badu, and on this track, teams up with fellow fusion artist Thundercat.
“Rhinestone Eyes” – Gorillaz – Plastic Beach (Parlophone, Virgin)
You don’t have to be a huge Gorillaz fan to appreciate their inventiveness and skill on this track.
“Last Donut of the Night” – J Dilla – Donuts (Stones Throw)
Written and recorded by Dilla as he succumbed to an incurable blood disease, Donuts is widely considered to be one of the best hip-hop albums of the last decade (if not longer). My brother got me hooked on this song, the penultimate track on the album, and I keep coming back to it.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s edition. If you have any song requests or ideas for a future edition of Now, feel free to send PTB an email via our Contact page or tweet at @PTBat9. Until next time!
